This week we are concluding our study of pumpkins and apples! We investigated the growing process of an apple tree and noticed that the growing process starts the same as a pumpkin (seed, sprout), but then differs as the apple grows on a tree and the pumpkin grows on a vine. We also compared the parts of an apple to the parts of a pumpkin by going outside and looking closely at them after Mrs. Brothers cut them open. We discussed that both require sunlight, air and water to grow. We also had a conversation about how the seeds were surrounded by the pulp as protection.
As part of our physical science standards we investigated how apples can change from being white color, hard and crunchy to being brown, soft and lumpy by cooking them into applesauce. It was a YUMMY experiment! A BIG THANK YOU to Grandpa DeRee who peeled and cut all the apples for us!
