We have spent some time learning different strategies to use when problem solving tricky new words when reading books and writing words throughout our day. As adults the first strategy we think of is to tell kids to sound out words. That's one of MANY different ways our brain uses when figuring out how to read or spell a new word. Looking for (when reading) or listening for (when spelling) little parts or little words we know can help us problem solve a new word. An example would be when working on the word little we know the part "it". Another way is to break a word into parts. Let's take the word skunk and break it apart SK-UN-K. In the second picture above I'm modeling using a strategy to write a new word. We ask the kids to Say It, Slide It, Hear It, Write It, Check It. Say It - They say the word. Slide It - They say the word while sliding their hand down their arm. Hear It - They are listening for the beginning (top of arm), middle (length of arm) and end (hand reaches back of hand) sounds of a word. Write It - They make an attempt at spelling the new word. Check It - They look at their attempt to see if it has all the sounds in the word and looks right. If it doesn't they have to make a new attempt. This doesn't necessarily mean they will have the word spelled correctly BUT it does mean they should have a readable attempt with all sounds present in the word.
