In math this week we did a "One Minute Challenge" with partners. To play you need one dice and a collection of smaller objects (legos, dried beans, buttons, etc). Partner 1 rolls the dice and calls out the number they rolled. Player 2 then quickly counts out that amount of objects and places it into a pile. Repeat until one minute is up. Then they estimated the amount they were able to get into their pile in one minute. Next they counted their amount by making groups of ten and then counting on by ones. Last they had to figure out the difference between their estimate and their actual amount. This would be a great activity to replicate at home as homework!
Above you will see the human number line we made comparing the different actual amounts partners were able to gather in their one minute. We had some great conversations about how 2 digit numbers communicate a lot about their amount by the number of tens and ones in the number.
