In math we checked in with our learning thus far with addition knowledge. We found that we need more time and experience with adding 3 addends and missing parts. We spent time reading story problems and then thinking about what was happening in the story problem and visualizing the story. We then identified the addition problem and lastly solved the problem. Students shared with each other strategies for solving these types of problems.
In writing we are kicking off our unit on persuasive writing by pretending to be Tom Turkey disguised as The Pigeon and convincing people to eat hot dogs instead of turkey on Thanksgiving. We worked through this writing piece together as a class to give them exposure to this type of writing. We read several Mo Willems books about The Pigeon trying to convince people let him do things like drive a bus, not take a bath and eat hot dogs. We brainstormed as a class reasons why it is a good idea to hot dogs instead of turkeys. Then we worked on taking those ideas and writing them into a paragraph.
