Well, we weren't able to build a snowman because it wasn't good packing snow but we had LOTS of fun together!
In science we have started our unit on Solids, Liquids and Gases. Students conducted experiments to define the properties of solids (have own shape, take up space), liquids (take the shape of the container they are in, take up space) and gases (do not have shape).
You can practice having your child identify solids, liquids and gases by having them walk around your house and find examples of each! We are so excited for author Mac Barnett to visit Scottish Corners next Monday! We have been discussing character traits of the different characters in his books this past week. Students worked together to create posters about the characters in his books. We will be hanging this up for him to see next week!
This is a great thing to practice when reading or discussing books with your children. Sometimes they are telling events and details instead of describing the character so we are working on clearing up that confusion. Last week we kicked off our unit on looking at the long vowel - consonant - silent e pattern (ex: came, ride, care, cube). We talked about how the vowel sound changes when the silent e is added. The silent E jumps over the consonant and makes the vowel say its long sound (letter name). The kids immediately started noticing words that have a silent e on the end that don't follow the pattern (ex: strange, sore, before, are) so we are now collect words that fit and do not fit the pattern.
