Sorry, no fun pictures today!
In reading we have started discussing how readers can tell the difference between a fiction and non-fiction text. At first we had to figure out what each of those words means. We decided a great way to remember is that Fiction and Fake both start with F. Then Non-Fiction means Not Fake so it is real. Today we poured through a stack of books looking at features of both types of texts. Here's what they came up with so far....
Fiction: painted pictures, make believe things (ex: squirrels using binoculars, bunnies sleeping in real beds), tells a story with a beginning/middle/end
Non-Fiction: real pictures, photographs, facts
We will continue to dive further into this next week as some students are still confusing the terminology. At home when they are reading ask them which type of text they are using and how they know if it is fiction or non-fiction.
In writing we have continued our unit on persuasive writing. I modeled for them this week how to write a persuasive letter by writing to my Dad to persuade him to take us all out for a pizza dinner. Through this we talked about the parts of a letter and what they need to include. Also this week we brainstormed a list of people they could write to and what they could write their opinions about. Don't be surprised if they start trying to persuade you about something! They might be trying out their skills!
